Velas is a village in Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra. It is noted as a birthplace of Nana Phadnis.He was sachiva- a secretary in Peshawai in Pune. It is also famous for its beaches and turtle festival which is held by the local people of Velas and Sahyadri Nisarg Mitra, Chiploon. 

2.LOCATION
Velas is located in Maharashtra's Ratnagiri district at a distance of around 215 km from Mumbai. You can reach Velas via NH-17 which is the Mumbai-Goa highway. A right turn from Goregaon takes you straight to Velas

3.NEAREST AIRPORT
The nearest airport is situated at Mumbai , Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj airport, which is 235kms from Velas . You can drive down from Mumbai to Velas via NH-17 . Rail : Pune Junction is the nearest major railway station to Velas which is located at a distance of 200 km from Velas.

RAILWAY STATION
The nearest railway station is Mangoan, Velas is 80km from it. It is not recommended to reach Velas by train. The best mode of transport is the roadway.

Velas is a medium size village located in Mandangad Taluka of Ratnagiri district, Maharashtra with total 157 families residing. The Velas village has population of 582 of which 306 are males while 276 are females as per Population Census 2011.

9.LOCAL TRANSPORTATION
Direct S.T. buses from Mumbai are available for Velas. There’s one bus at mid-night that reaches Velas at 6:30 AM in the morning and there’s other one that leaves Mumbai at noon and reaches Velas at 8:00 PM. Seats can be reserved through MSRTC online reservation website. Local S.T. buses are also available from Mandangad and Dapoli to Velas. ST doesn’t operate semi-luxury or Volvo buses on this route.

10.VISIT TIME
The best time to visit is from mid-march to mid-April. Velas Turtle Festival is not just about little turtles hatching season and the beautiful beaches, there something more to it.
